Living and teaching in the USA is one of the most transformative experiences an educator can have in their lifetime. Through the TeachUSA program, you will have the opportunity to work as a teacher or teacher assistant in public or private schools across the United States, enhance your teaching skills, immerse yourself in an advanced educational system, and grow both professionally and personally. The main goal of the program is for you to strengthen your pedagogical competencies, acquire new educational methodologies and techniques, gain experience in an international academic system, enrich your cultural and professional life…All of this while proudly representing Dominican culture and building educational bridges between both countries.

Basic Requirements

0 – General Requirements

  • Hold a degree in education or a related academic field.
  • Have advanced English proficiency.
  • Meet the requirements to teach at the primary, preschool, or secondary level in the Dominican Republic.
  • Meet the teacher eligibility standards of the U.S. state in which you will be working.
  • Demonstrate sufficient maturity, stability, and motivation to perform successfully as a teacher.
  • Have sufficient financial resources for the initial phase of your stay.
  • Be willing to travel and commit to a program of three (3) years or more.

1 – Teacher Category (Full-Time Professor)

Applicants may qualify as Teachers if they meet one of the following requirements:

Pathway A (Primary):

Have two (2) years of full-time teaching experience after obtaining their university degree and Be currently employed as a teacher at an educational institution.

Pathway B (Alternative):

Have two (2) years of full-time teaching experience within the last eight (8) years; and have completed (or be about to complete within the last 12 months) an advanced degree in education or a related academic field.

Fees

The applicant acknowledges that participation in the TCH program has a cost, which must be paid by the applicant, a family member, or a financial institution, under the flexibility of the Deferred Payment Plan (DPP). The DPP is a payment option that allows the teacher to cover part of the program fees while legally working in the United States as a TeachUSA participant, according to the conditions established in the DPP Agreement that the participant must sign with the sponsor. However, the teacher has the option to pay the total program fee while still in the Dominican Republic if they wish.

The total program cost is comprised of several separate fees, organized as follows:

What’s included in the program fee

The program fee includes the following expenses, procedures, and services:

  1. Interview to assess the applicant’s profile
  2. Forms, Documents, and Manuals
  3. Document Translation
  4. Sponsorship by a sponsor in the USA
  5. DS-2019
  6. Placement
  7. Assistance with the J-1 visa application
  8. Assisting applicants in preparing for interviews with potential employers
  9. Pre-consular guidance
  10. Pre-departure guidance
  11. Assistance with travel arrangements
  12. Portfolio and T-shirt

The following expenses are not included in the fee charged by CALEXS or the sponsor, and are the sole responsibility of the applicant, namely:

  1. Transportation to the Applicant Service Center (ASC), the consulate, and/or teacher fairs, if any;
  2. Fees required to obtain a passport, transcript, criminal record certificate, or any other document required for participation in the program;
  3. Air or bus tickets to the final destination or return to the Dominican Republic;
  4. Pathways Training expenses, annual renewal, transfers, lodging, transportation, housing, utilities, food and taxes during the applicant’s stay in the United States of America

Refund and retention policy:

Depending on the situation detailed below, CALEXS will retain the following amounts from the participant’s program fee paid to date, and the remaining portion will be refunded:

  • The initial $750 fee charged by the sponsor to the applicant to guarantee their place in the program is non-refundable if the participant withdraws from the program or their J-1 visa is denied.
  • The $185 consular fee paid to the embassy and the $220 SEVIS fee paid to the U.S. Department of State are non-refundable by these institutions in the unlikely event that the participant’s visa is denied.
  • If the participant selects a teaching position, interviews with the school or school district, and the employer extends a formal job offer (Teacher Job Offer) that the participant decides to decline before Form DS-2019 is issued, an administrative penalty of ONE THOUSAND US DOLLARS (US$1,000) will be applied.
  • If participants withdraw after accepting the offer but before Form DS-2019 is issued, a fee of US$1,000 will be charged.
  • If the participant withdraws after the DS-2019 form has been issued, they will be charged US$1,570.
  • If the visa is denied, they will be charged US$1,270.
